How costs have changed
UNCDF reported in April 2023 that sending US$200 from the United States to South Sudan cost 5.3% in the third quarter of 2022 2. It named the United States among the least costly corridors to South Sudan 2. The World Bank average for the same amount in the third quarter of 2025 was 4.38% 1.
The World Bank rated the disbursing network in South Sudan as low for every provider surveyed 1. Check that a payout point is open near the receiver before you send.
Sending to a mobile money wallet
The World Bank survey did not include a mobile wallet payout for this corridor 1. Lezeth Khoza of ITWeb reported on 29 May 2025 that MTN MoMo South Sudan and Onafriq launched inbound remittances from 15 countries, including the United States 3.
Amnon Jakony of Access Radio reported on 27 June 2025 that MoMo users can receive money from 12 countries, including the United States 4. The two reports give different country counts 3,4. Neither report gave fees or limits 3,4.
A receiver joins MoMo by dialling *200# on an MTN South Sudan number 8. Access Radio reported in September 2026 that a Tier One wallet, opened with a simplified ID, has a daily limit of SSP 1,625,000 and a maximum balance of SSP 6,500,000 9.
Collecting cash and your rights as a sender
- Western Union says a receiver collecting cash needs a valid government ID and the tracking number, called the MTCN 5.
- The receiver should know the sender's full name and the expected amount 5.
- Under US federal rules, you can cancel a remittance transfer within 30 minutes of paying. The provider must refund you within three business days 6.
- The CFPB says transfers of less than US$15 are not remittance transfers under federal law 7.
